Xiaomi SU7 EV involved in fatal crash, leaving three dead

A recent traffic accident involving the Xiaomi SU7 electric vehicle (EV) has resulted in the tragic deaths of three individuals, sparking discussions about the reliability of advanced smart driving technologies.

The incident occurred on March 29, when a Xiaomi SU7 EV reportedly collided with a cement barrier along the Dezhou-Shangrao Expressway. 

According to company records, the vehicle was operating in NOA (Navigation on Autopilot) mode, maintaining a speed of 116 km per hour before encountering a section of road under construction. 

Traffic barriers had redirected vehicles to the opposite lane, creating a complex driving environment.

Xiaomi stated that the vehicle detected an obstacle and issued a warning 2-4 seconds prior to the collision, prompting the driver to switch from autopilot to manual mode. Despite efforts to decelerate and steer, the vehicle ultimately crashed into a barrier at a recorded speed of approximately 97 km per hour.

The accident drew widespread attention on Chinese social media platforms, with many users voicing concerns about the safety protocols of Xiaomi's smart driving technology and calling for a thorough investigation. 

Reports from various local media outlets indicated that the casualties resulted from the vehicle's doors locking upon impact and a subsequent battery fire.

Authorities in Tongling, East China's Anhui Province, have initiated an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident. Xiaomi has expressed deep regret over the incident and pledged full cooperation with local police to ensure transparency throughout the investigation process.

Xiaomi, which has expanded its business into the electric vehicle industry from its established presence in consumer electronics, markets the SU7 as an innovative EV equipped with cutting-edge driving technology. The company has not yet released a formal statement beyond acknowledging the incident and its commitment to cooperation.

Industry experts have noted that while smart driving systems are designed to enhance road safety and minimize human error, they remain an evolving technology requiring rigorous testing and ongoing refinement. This tragic accident has intensified calls for improved regulations and safety evaluations for vehicles equipped with advanced autonomous systems.
