A foreign man cycling through China sought help from police after running low on funds and facing freezing weather.
A foreign man riding a bicycle through China found himself in trouble when he ran low on funds and encountered freezing temperatures in Baiyin, Gansu Province. Seeking help, he approached a local police station, where officers took swift action to ensure his safety.
Stranded in the Cold
At around 6 p.m., a dust-covered foreign man pushed his bicycle into a police station in Baiyin. Through basic English conversation, officers learned that he had planned to cycle along the Silk Road but had miscalculated his expenses, leaving him with barely enough money for food. As temperatures plunged and strong winds swept through the area, he asked if he could set up his tent near the station for the night.
Swift Response from Police
"His safety was our top concern," said an officer on duty. The case was immediately reported to senior officials, and the local public security bureau activated its response mechanism for foreign visitors. The immigration department and Xingping Road Police Station quickly verified his passport, visa, and travel history, confirming that he had entered China legally and had no irregularities in his records.
Realizing he had not eaten, officers took him to a nearby restaurant and personally paid for a steaming bowl of noodles. Noticing his thin clothing and the approaching subzero temperatures, they became increasingly worried—outdoor camping could pose serious risks. To ensure his safety, the police station arranged for him to stay in a local hotel free of charge. Before leaving, officers handed him their contact information. "If you need anything, call us anytime!" they told him.
Continued Assistance Along the Way
As he continued his journey into the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, he once again encountered difficulties. Local police there, using translation software to communicate, arranged temporary lodging for him and provided drinking water and food.
The next morning, before he set off again, officers checked on his well-being and purchased some additional cycling supplies for him. Before parting, he used a translation app to express his gratitude: "Thank you very much to the Chinese police for your help."
