Chinese Relationship Coach Fined Over US$1 Million for Tax Evasion

A prominent online relationship coach in China, widely known for encouraging women to strategically pursue wealthy partners, has been fined approximately 7.58 million yuan (about US$1.1 million) for tax evasion.

The individual, who operates under the name "Ququ Big Woman," is Le Chuanqu—a former singer turned internet personality.

Le gained massive popularity through livestreams and online courses where she framed romantic relationships and marriage as tools for achieving financial and social advancement.

Her self-description as the "McKinsey of relationships" emphasized her businesslike approach to personal development and matchmaking.

Le's business reportedly generates an annual income of 142 million yuan (US$20 million).

Her offerings include online courses priced at several thousand yuan, one-on-one consultations, and premium membership programs exceeding US$25,000.

Despite these earnings, she reported only a fraction of her income—600,000 yuan over two years.

Tax authorities in Shanghai used data analysis tools to identify discrepancies in her declared income. The resulting fine includes back taxes, penalties, and interest.

Le had previously come under fire from state media for promoting values seen as materialistic and harmful.

She was removed from multiple social media platforms in 2023 but continued to operate privately with a dedicated following.

In a public statement, Le expressed regret over the incident and committed to following tax laws moving forward.

The case has sparked widespread discussion online, with some users criticising the glamorisation of wealth-driven relationships and others calling for harsher penalties.
