The Cherry Orchard is a timeless masterpiece by Russian playwright Anton Chekhov. First performed at the Moscow Art Theater in 1904, it has earned its place as one of the theater's most treasured works.
This French adaptation of The Cherry Orchard premiered in 2021, opening the 75th Avignon Theater Festival. Directed by Tiago Rodrigues, this production stars the internationally acclaimed French actress Isabelle Huppert in the lead role, Lyubov.
Huppert's performance masterfully captures both the comedic and tragic dimensions of her character, adding depth and allure to the role. Tiago Rodrigues, both the director of the play and the current director of the Avignon Theater Festival, presents a fresh perspective on Chekhov's classic.
The play explores the themes of "change of ownership and the disappearance of the cherry orchard," reflecting the societal shifts of late 19th and early 20th century Russia. Through elegant storytelling, it examines the rise of capitalism and the decline of the aristocracy.

Set against the backdrop of the 4,500-meter-altitude salt-carrying ancient route in northern Tibet, the dance theater production Extreme Artistic Conception Place unfolds the grandeur of the snowy plateau and the unique landscape of the northern Tibetan grasslands through dance, music, and poetic expression.
The work is divided into five chapters—Xing (Journey), Yun (Clouds), Ji (Ritual), Li (Ceremony), and Yi (Wings)—narrating the poignant tale of salt-carriers and their steeds who brave wind and snow to inherit their ancestors' will, embarking on a path of life to harvest nature's bounty.
By reinterpreting traditional folk dance culture through contemporary artistic language, the production guides audiences to trace the survival wisdom of Tibetan communities over millennia, experience the unique charm of the snowy plateau, and contemplate the relationship between humanity and nature.
Human culture forms its destined trajectory across different dimensions, much like the 'salt-carriers' who have long embarked on their snow-capped mountain paths and discovered the legends of nature.

Sunset Boulevard @ AIA Grand Theatre
Sunset Boulevard is a haunting and magnificent tale of faded glory and unfulfilled ambition.Silent movie star Norma Desmond longs for a return to the big screen, having been discarded by Tinseltown with the advent of 'talkies,' her glamour having departed in all but her mind. When she meets struggling Hollywood screenwriter Joe Gillis in dramatic circumstances, their subsequent passionate and volatile relationship leads to an unforeseen and tragic conclusion.Based on the 1950 American black comedy film noir of the same name, which was written and directed by Billy Wilder, Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical masterpiece Sunset Boulevard features the songs 'The Perfect Year,' 'As If We Never Said Goodbye,' 'New Ways to Dream,' 'With One Look' and – of course – 'Sunset Boulevard.'Click below to get your tickets now:

The whole truth about lies? Is that even conceivable – and desirable? In our latest project, Berlin music theater company Nico and the Navigators focus on the most powerful weapon of populist politicians: the lie.The presidential election in the USA, in which a shameless liar triumphed, has recently shown how effectively this age-old means of gaining power can be used. But the rise of right-wing nationalist forces in other parts of the world also often goes hand in hand with the targeted use of untruths, disinformation, and fake news. With 'The Whole Truth about Lies,' they are transforming the stage into a lie detector. The production deals – sometimes tongue-in-cheek, sometimes stately – with the truth as an abstract quantity that can have an existential effect in both the private and political spheres and bring about unexpected catastrophes. The result is a show about self-deception, heteronomy, white lies, and fallaciesClick below to get your tickets now:
Fri & Sat Apr 25 & 26, 7.30pm; RMB180-580Wall @ Shanghai International Dance Center
The dance piece Wall uses the physical structure of a wall as a metaphor for the trajectory of life, reflecting the cyclical journey of seasons.
Concepts like 'enclosure' and 'rupture,' 'construction' and 'collapse,' 'straightness' and 'serpentine paths' represent both the tangible forms of walls and the complexities of human character and life experiences.
'Enclosure' symbolizes collective security and external boundaries, while 'rupture' signifies breaking free from constraints and embarking on new explorations.
In the physical world, material 'walls' persist eternally in a loop of repetition. Yet, the human spirit and wisdom remain boundless—it is the 'walls' within one's heart that ultimately define the colors of life.

Nomadic @ Shanghai International Dance Center
Everyone defines 'Nomadic' for themselves. It is to move away from home, to lose loved ones, and to be a migration.
Some people are willing to abandon everything they own to be nomad, to taste freedom and loneliness, to dream of the carnival of life, to look forward to the destination of the lost way.
Time, invisible but powerful; we grow up, we drift, forever on the track of time.
Wandering, even if have nothing on hand, even if have nowhere to stand, don't be afraid to move forward, let's go, leave here, go through the thorns of the road ahead, and pour the land with blood until the feet are bright. Wandering, the moment when my heart is not dependent.
This work takes the body itself as the starting point, according to the basic rhythm of Mongolian dance; combine the body movements of contemporary dance to develop and create unique dance language.
The choreographer creates body shapes in a variety of emotions with a large number of footsteps. The Mongolian broad and deep music melody outlines the emotional ups and downs of the human heart.

French Original Musical Molière @ Shanghai Culture Square
My name is Jean-Baptiste, Jean-Baptiste Poquelin.
I have set the course of my destiny, I have chosen to be a theater actor.
Molière is an indispensable part of French culture and a resounding name in the history of world theater. As one of the most significant writers of 17th-century French classicism, he was a pioneer of comedy, his works holding an important place in European theatrical history.
Centuries later, his plays still resonate. So it's hardly surprising to see Molière and his life transformed into an opera... somewhere between slam and rap.
That's the promise of Molière, L'opéra Urbain, produced by Dove Attia, the man behind such popular hits as The Ten Commandments, The Sun King and Mozart the Rock Opera.
While the sets and costumes will be period, 17th century, this is a staging that promises to be modern.
