‘Shameful’ Japanese tourists detained in China

Two Japanese tourists in their 20s were detained in China for two weeks and later deported after taking photos at the Great Wall that included exposed buttocks, according to local media reports.

The incident occurred at the UNESCO World Heritage site near Beijing, where a man exposed himself while a woman took pictures, as reported by NTV and other Japanese news outlets on March 13.

Japan's Foreign Ministry confirmed that its embassy in China learned of the detentions on January 3.

The two individuals were eventually released and returned to Japan later that month.

However, the Japanese embassy in Beijing did not respond to requests for comment.

Citing sources, reports stated that the tourists were immediately detained by security personnel and held for approximately two weeks.

In China, public exposure of the lower body is illegal.

The pair reportedly told Japanese officials that their actions were meant as a prank.

However, the incident sparked widespread outrage in China, where historical tensions related to Japan's colonial past still resonate.

A trending hashtag translating to "Japanese man and woman detained for indecent behaviour at the Great Wall" gained over 60 million views on Weibo by Friday morning.

Many of the top comments condemned the tourists, with some calling for a ban on Japanese visitors.

Chinese actor Chen Yitian, who has over seven million followers, criticized the pair, saying they had done "shameful things on my Great Wall."
