Myanmar Hit by 7。9 Quake; Bangkok Skyscraper Collapses & MORE

7.9-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Myanmar, Bangkok Skyscraper Collapses, Thai PM Declares State of Emergency

A powerful 7.9-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar on March 28, triggering widespread destruction and regional panic. The tremor, felt across several Southeast Asian countries, caused buildings to collapse in Myanmar's capital Naypyidaw and led to a tragic incident in neighboring Thailand's capital, Bangkok.

According to Thai media, an under-construction high-rise building in Bangkok collapsed due to the quake, leaving one person dead and 43 others missing. In response, Thai Prime Minister Phaethongthan declared a state of emergency in the capital to facilitate urgent search and rescue operations and prevent further casualties.

Footage and images from Myanmar reveal widespread damage. Numerous structures crumbled under the force of the earthquake, including the iconic Ava Bridge in Mandalay over the Irrawaddy River, which partially collapsed.

The China Earthquake Networks Center officially recorded the quake at 2:20 PM local time, with an epicenter located at 21.85°N, 95.95°E and a depth of 30 kilometers. Just 12 minutes later, at 2:32 PM, a second strong quake measuring 6.4 struck the region, deepening the devastation. The epicenter of the initial quake is reported to be just 294 kilometers from China's border.

The tremors were strongly felt in China's Yunnan Province, particularly in the border city of Ruili. The local emergency management bureau confirmed that buildings sustained damage and several people were injured. Rescue teams have been mobilized, and emergency response efforts are actively underway.

Authorities across the region are continuing to assess the full extent of the destruction as aftershocks pose ongoing risks. The situation remains fluid, and updates are expected as emergency personnel reach affected zones.
