China will soon allow nationwide cross-regional marriage registration, removing the requirement to register in one's hukou location, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs.
Couples can choose a registry office in either partner's habitual residence, simplifying the process.
This change benefits those living away from their hukou, particularly younger generations.
A pilot program launched in 2021 has already helped thousands.
The reform is supported by a digital marriage registration system, enabling seamless data sharing and online appointments for greater convenience.
