Recently, Haikou's 12345 service center reported a case where a foreign passenger and a taxi driver had a dispute over payment.
Before the 12345 hotline was contacted, the local police station noted that communication difficulties had led to a misunderstanding between the two parties, requiring assistance from the English-speaking service desk.
The taxi driver explained, "I didn't receive the payment, but the foreign passenger kept saying he had already confirmed it. I couldn't understand him, so I had to call the police station."When the foreign passenger took the call, the service staff mediated: "Hello, the taxi driver mentioned that you booked a ride from the airport to your destination, correct?"The foreign passenger replied, "I think there was an issue with the system transfer. I'll return to the taxi and make the payment. Oh, I can pay now. Can I leave the police station?"The staff confirmed, "So you can pay the fare now?""Yes," the passenger said.Relaying the message, the staff informed the driver, "He says he can pay now."However, the driver remained confused: "We don't understand. Earlier, we couldn't communicate, so he just handed me some cash from his country, but I couldn't figure out how much it was worth."The service staff inquired about the fare."It's 65 yuan," the driver responded. To resolve the issue, the service staff asked the foreign passenger if he had any Chinese currency."Do you have renminbi?""No, I only have euros," the passenger replied. "I'm willing to pay, but I don't know how."After checking the exchange rate, the police found that 8.5 euros would cover the fare, given the current rate of 7.6 yuan per euro. However, the passenger only had 10- and 20-euro bills. After coordination, the passenger paid 10 euros, and the driver returned 11 yuan in change.Upon realizing the actual fare, the foreign passenger expressed surprise, saying, "I thought it was thousands of euros! I'm angry,I'm angry."In recent years, 12345 hotline has become an increasingly important resource for foreigners needing assistance with daily issues, from transportation disputes to general inquiries about life in the city. With multilingual support and coordination with local authorities, it continues to help bridge communication gaps and resolve misunderstandings efficiently. For foreign visitors facing similar challenges, there's no need to panic—help is just a phone call away.
