According to the Hangzhou Police, the incident is under investigation as a criminal case. The man, identified as Li (22 years old), sparked the event by igniting fireworks in a crowd near the Hubin Area, despite warnings from those nearby. The incident occurred around midnight, as the man attempted to draw attention to himself. He ignored advice to stop and proceeded to set off fireworks into the air, causing potential danger. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
Local officers responded swiftly, apprehending Li and confiscating the fireworks. The police have since placed him under criminal detention. The case is still under further investigation.
The police have issued a public reminder of the dangers of setting off fireworks in densely crowded areas. Fireworks launched into the sky near balloons can easily cause an explosion, posing severe risks to public safety. Authorities urge citizens to celebrate responsibly, follow local fireworks regulations, and protect the safety of the community.
Key guidelines include:
Adhering to the prohibition on fireworks in certain areas, and opting for safer alternatives such as electronic sprays or electronic firecrackers during festive occasions.
Avoiding the transportation of fireworks and firecrackers on public transportation, such as subways and buses.
Purchasing fireworks only from licensed retailers and ensuring that the products are clean, well-maintained, and free of damage or mold.
Following the product instructions when lighting fireworks, ensuring that they are used in outdoor, open, and clear spaces, free from any obstructions.
In case of violations or suspicious activity, the police urge the public to report to the following numbers: Violations related to the use or transport of fireworks: 110; Illegal production, wholesale, or retail fireworks activities: 12345.
