Losing your passport while staying in China can be a stressful situation. Here's what you need to do if you find yourself in this predicament.

  • Step 1: Report the Loss
If you lose your passport, the first thing you should do is visit the nearest police station to report the loss. Obtain a "Report Receipt" or "Loss Report Certificate" that includes your name. If you're unsure where the passport was lost, you can report the loss at the police station in the area where you live.
  • Step 2: Apply for a Loss Report Certificate

After reporting the loss at the police station, head to the Exit-Entry Administration Bureau of the Public Security Bureau. Follow the staff's instructions to apply for a "Foreign National Passport Loss Certificate".
You will typically need to provide the following documents:
  1. The police-issued report document, such as the "Report Receipt".

  2. Identification materials, such as a copy of your lost passport, student ID, or national ID from your home country.

The Foreign National Passport Loss Certificate is valid for 30 days. During this period, make sure to apply for a new passport and visa. Until you receive your new passport, the loss certificate serves as a temporary legal ID that you can use at airports, train stations, and other locations.
  • Step 3: Apply for a New Passport

Take the "Foreign National Passport Loss Certificate" and visit your home country's embassy or consulate in China to apply for a new passport.

Note: Make sure to check whether the embassy or consulate requires an appointment in advance, and familiarize yourself with the passport replacement process, timeline, and specific requirements.
  • Step 4: Apply for a New Visa or Residence Permit
Once you receive your new passport, go to the Exit-Entry Administration Bureau of the Public Security Bureau to apply for the appropriate visa or residence permit.
You will generally need to provide the following documents:
  1. The original new passport.
  2. The "Foreign National Passport Loss Certificate".
  Important Notes:
If your passport number changes, you will need to re-register your accommodation information.
If your residence permit information changes, you must apply for a new residence permit within ten days of the change at the local Public Security Bureau Exit-Entry Administration Bureau.
By following these steps, you can handle the situation effectively and minimize any inconvenience caused by losing your passport in China.
