As the Lunar New Year approaches, companies in China are getting creative with their employee gifts, and some have gone quite unconventional. Tencent, the tech giant, gave its employees giant sugar canes for the Laba Festival, a prelude to the Lunar New Year. The Cantonese idiom "dim gwo luk ze" (straighter than sugar cane) means "all is well," making it a sweet New Year wish.
Other companies have also dished out some quirky gifts:
Red Underwear: Some employees received red underwear, believed to bring good luck during one's "year of fate" or simply because red is an auspicious color.
Wigs: A cultural product company gifted wigs to employees born in the 1990s, playing on the Chinese character "fa" in wig, which also means "making a great fortune."
Livestock: Some received live chickens, ducks, or even sheep, a nod to ancient traditions where killing livestock was believed to bring luck, though it's now more of a novelty (or even a burden).
These gifts range from practical to playful, reflecting the diverse ways companies celebrate the New Year with their employees.
