126 Dead, 188 Injured in 6。8 Magnitude Quake in Southwest China

  According to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC), a 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck near Cuoguo Township, Dingri County, Shigatse City, Xizang at 9:05 AM on January 7, Beijing time.

 As of 7:00 PM on January 7, preliminary reports from Xinhua News Agency indicated that the earthquake had caused 126 fatalities and left 188 people injured. Twenty-eight of the injured were in critical condition and had been transferred to a city hospital for treatment. In addition, 3,609 households were reported to have collapsed.

  Further analysis by CENC confirmed that another aftershock, measuring 3.1 on the Richter scale, occurred in Dingri County at 8:08 AM on January 8. The epicenter was located at 28.77°N latitude and 87.46°E longitude, with a depth of 10 kilometers.
  Mr. Liu, a local businessman in Shigatse, shared with reporters on January 7 that life in the city was largely returning to normal, but the situation in Dingri County remained severe. Many local vendors in Shigatse come from Dingri County, and Liu had rushed back to assess the damage.
  Staff from Dingri County's Emergency Management Bureau reported on January 7 that several rural towns had seen significant building collapses. Emergency teams, in collaboration with other relevant authorities, were organizing rescue operations. Urgent relief materials such as tents, blankets, and beds were needed in the affected areas.
  Various national agencies, including the National Food and Strategic Reserves Administration, the Chinese Red Cross, the Ministry of Finance, and the Ministry of Emergency Management, have initiated emergency response efforts and are assisting the disaster-stricken population.
  As a safety measure following the earthquake, the Mount Everest Scenic Area announced it would suspend all public access starting at 10:00 AM on January 7, with further updates on the reopening schedule to be provided later.
