A recent post by a foreigner in China on social media has sparked widespread discussion online.. The individual, who has been employed at a university in Jiangxi for six years, shared his shock after being informed that his contract would not be renewed.
The foreigner in China Seeks Legal Help After College Announces Non-Renewal of Contract In his post, the blogger detailed his experience: "I'm a foreigner who came to China in 2008 to pursue a Master's and Ph.D. in Information Engineering at a university in Wuhan. After completing my postdoctoral research at a university in Shenzhen, I worked in the UK for a year. In 2019, I began working as an associate professor at a university in Jiangxi. Now, as I approach my six-year mark, the school has suddenly informed me that they will not be renewing my contract. This came as a complete shock. What should I do? I am at a loss—I can't afford to lose my job. Is it legal for the university to not renew my contract? I hope someone can offer advice." The post quickly gained attention, drawing a variety of comments from netizens. One of the most liked responses read: "Your position was always contract-based, without permanent staff status. Contracts typically last 5 to 6 years, after which there's an assessment. If the assessment is unfavorable, the usual outcome is either a job reassignment or termination. Even with fixed positions, if the first contract assessment fails, the result is the same—either downgraded employment or dismissal. Many universities also require individuals to repay relocation allowances if they're let go. The situation you're facing is essentially akin to a business 'betting agreement.' As for compensation, don't expect much—legal action likely won't succeed. Please review the agreement you signed when you first joined." In response to the comments, the individual updated his post: "Thank you to everyone who commented. In the days since posting, I've learned a great deal about workplace norms, legal issues, and career expectations—knowledge that has far exceeded anything I've learned in the past decade. Regarding the sudden contract issue, my feelings of confusion have settled, and I will contact a lawyer. I plan to handle this calmly and professionally, strictly based on the contract and its execution. I hope that everyone, including myself, can always remain rational, objective, and respectful in such situations. I want to clarify: as long as the process is reasonable, fair, and in accordance with social norms, we must accept it. That's all there is to it." Although the matter remains unresolved, the online discussion serves as a reminder of the importance of understanding the terms of one's employment contract and the legal framework in place. The situation also highlights the value of clear communication and the need for patience and professionalism when addressing workplace challenges.
