The Dangers of Cardiac Arrest: A Medical Warning
Cardiac arrest, also known as sudden cardiac arrest (SCA), occurs when the heart unexpectedly stops beating. This condition disrupts the heart's ability to pump blood, causing the body's organs to lose their blood supply within seconds, leading to clinical death if not addressed immediately.
Those with underlying conditions such as high blood pressure or heart disease are at an increased risk of sudden cardiac arrest and should be extra vigilant about their heart health, particularly in winter when heart issues are more prevalent.
Doctors advise that symptoms of an impending cardiac arrest can appear up to a month in advance. These symptoms may include: chest tightness, chest pain, abdominal pain, tooth pain, and unexplained nausea and vomiting.
Once cardiac arrest occurs, every second counts. The critical window for resuscitation is the first four minutes. If a patient does not receive medical intervention within 4 to 6 minutes, vital organs, including the brain, will suffer from severe oxygen deprivation, which can lead to permanent damage or death.
If you witness someone experiencing cardiac arrest, Immediate CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) should be administered. The use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is the most effective method if available. If an AED is not nearby, performing manual chest compressions and calling for emergency medical assistance (dialing 120 in China) are vital steps to take.
