The Loy Krathong in 2024 will be celebrated on the night of November 16th.

In 2025, this festival will fall on the night of November 6th.

Yi Peng Lantern Festival


The Yi Peng Lantern Festival will be on November 15-16, 2024.

This Yi Peng Lantern Festival in 2025 will be on November 5-6, 2025.



What Is the Loy Krathong and Yi Peng Lantern Festival

Loy Krathong



It's an amazing festival where we put lights into the water and offer our prayers! People get creative and make beautiful water lanterns using banana leaves, fruits or flowers. What's more, the Thais hold the lovely belief that these lanterns have the power to chase away bad luck. It's truly a special and heart - warming tradition!


Yi Peng Lantern Festival



The Yi Peng Lantern Festival is for releasing sky lanterns and praying for happiness. It's mainly celebrated in northern Thailand, and Chiang Mai is the top place to enjoy it. When lit, it rises slowly, becoming a bright spot. This festival is popular among young lovers. Couples love to light lanterns together and pray for lasting happiness among the romantic lanterns.


13 Days Thailand Lantern Festival Tour

Day 1: Arrival in Bangkok


Fly to Bangkok, be welcomed by a local guide at the airport, take a private transfer to the hotel for check - in, and then relax to overcome jet lag.



Day 2: Bangkok City Discovery by Local Transport


On a full - day guided tour, see Bangkok's main sights using various public transports. The guide will take you by BTS or MRT to a river pier, then by shared water bus. Visit the Grand Palace after disembarking. Have Thai food at a local restaurant and then go to Wat Pho. End the day with a tuk - tuk ride to a flower market and return to the hotel by BTS or MRT.





Day 3: Bangkok Side Trip to Local Markets


Relax this morning before exploring two special Thai markets near Bangkok. One is the 100 - meter - long Mae Klong market along the railway, where vendors quickly move their stalls when a train passes. At the Amphawa Floating Market, take a longtail boat ride past fruit - filled boats to experience an old - style floating market. You can visit food vendors, haggle, and try local food. After, return to Bangkok for the night.





Day 4: Bangkok – Sukhothai


After a relaxing morning, take a private transfer to the airport and fly to Sukhothai, where the Loy Krathong festival originated during the Sukhothai Kingdom (1238 - 1438). Once you land, you'll be picked up and taken to your hotel. In the evening, go out with your guide to take part in the exciting celebration, including traditional dance, play, and martial art exhibitions.




Day 5: Sukhothai, Loy Krathong Festival


Explore the Sukhothai Historical Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with ancient royal palace and Buddhist temple ruins and other structures showing the nation's great history, and visit the nearby Ramkhamhaeng National Museum for better understanding.



Celebrate the festival by releasing a handmade Krathong (a lantern with candles, incense sticks and flowers) on the river as Thais believe it can dispel worries and bring happiness. End the exciting day with a Light and Sound Show about the story of Loi Krathong and Sukhothai's history, along with fireworks and a dance performance near Wat Mahathat.




Day 6: Sukhothai - Lampang - Chiang Mai


Leave Sukhothai for Chiang Mai , and visit Wat Phra That Lampang Luang during the journey. Its chedi, murals and carvings are full of charm. When arriving in Chiang Mai, which was the historical center of the Lanna Kingdom from the 13th to 18th centuries, check into the hotel and relax for the rest of the day.



Day 7: Chiang Mai, Yi Peng Festival


First, visit the Warorot Market by the river where local treats are sold by vendors. Then, take a traditional Samlor (three - wheel rickshaw) through the Thapae Gate to Chiang Mai's Old City and explore Wat Chedi Luang and Wat Phra Singh.



In the late afternoon, go to experience the grand Yi Peng Festival Celebration. Enjoy cultural shows like the Sword Dance, taste the Lanna Thai basket set, and watch the monk chanting and meditation ceremony. Then, release sky lanterns as a way to worship the Lord Buddha. Thai people think this will get rid of worries and bring good luck for the next year.




Day 9: Chiang Mai, Elephant Encounter


In the morning, go to the countryside from the city to take part in an elephant - care activity at a sanctuary and feed Asian elephants by hand. In the afternoon, drive to Wat Umong with tunnels, explore Buddha - related items and get blessings from a monk. Later, go to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep on the mountaintop to enjoy the panoramic views of Chiang Mai.




Day 10: Chiang Mai - Khao Lak


After the festival, take a late - morning flight to the tropical islands in southern Thailand for a great getaway. When you land at Phuket airport, transfer to your beach resort in Khao Lak on Phang Nga's beautiful coastline. Spend the rest of the day relaxing on the beach, by the pool or at the spa.




Day 11: Khao Lak, Leisure Day


Enjoy a whole day of relaxation in Khao Lak. With clear water, beautiful beaches, and ancient rainforests around. You can take a wonderful day trip to nearby islets such as the well - known James Bond Island, Phi Phi Islands, and Similan Islands. If you prefer land - based adventures, explore the nearby Khao Lak - Lam Ru National Park or the more distant Khao Sok National Park.





Day 12: Khao Lak, Leisure Day


Enjoy another day free to do as much or as little as you like, whether lazing on the soft sandy beach or exploring more of the area's attractions.



Day 13: Khao Lak, Departure


After a final morning relaxing at your hotel, you will be taken to the airport well in advance of your departure flight, either home or to your next destination.
