On October 24, Canada lifted the restrictions imposed on February 3, 2022, which limited Chinese carriers to a total of six round-trip flights per week to Canada and banned direct flights between Beijing and Canada.

Starting from October 25, 2024, these restrictions will be removed for Chinese carriers including Air China, Capital Airlines, China Eastern Airlines, China Southern Airlines, Hainan Airlines, Sichuan Airlines, and Xiamen Airlines, allowing them to resume and expand services to Canada.

According to the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), Air Canada plans to increase its direct flights from Vancouver to Shanghai, expanding from four to seven round-trip flights per week starting December 7, 2024. Additionally, from January 15, 2025, Air Canada will resume direct flights between Vancouver and Beijing with seven round-trip flights per week. Meanwhile, Chinese airlines are also accelerating their applications to increase the frequency of their flights to Canada.
The expansion of direct flights between Chinese and Canadian airlines is expected to boost bilateral travel and trade, as well as facilitate the recovery of the aviation market between the two countries.
According to data from the Beijing Youth Daily, flight search trends on travel platforms show a sharp increase in demand for flights to Canada. The most popular routes include Guangzhou-Toronto, Shanghai-Toronto, Shanghai-Vancouver, and Beijing-Vancouver. Currently, the price for direct flights is around 5,000 RMB.
Industry analysts from Qunar's Big Data Research Institute believe that the removal of these flight restrictions will enable Chinese airlines to apply for additional flights, with the possibility of adding more services before the Chinese New Year. This is expected to lead to a significant increase in flight availability between China and North America, potentially lowering airfare prices as competition rises.
