Bizarre Scam : The 'Marriage Bed' Trick That Cost a Man's Savings

A bizarre scam unfolded in Tianjin, China, where a man was defrauded out of 100,000 yuan in a so-called "marriage bed burning" ritual. The victim, Mr. Wang, had met his fiancée, Ms. Li, on an online dating platform. She claimed to be a wealthy widow with multiple properties and a jewelry store.

As their relationship progressed, Li convinced Wang of her wealth through gifts and social media posts. Before their marriage, she requested a ritual to burn her ex-husband's marriage bed, who had allegedly passed away, claiming this would release his spirit and allow her to inherit his properties.
Li demanded 100,000 yuan for the ritual, insisting Wang not attend for fear of bad luck. After sending the money and receiving videos of the supposed event, Wang was blocked by Li and realized he had been scammed.
Investigation revealed Li had previously defrauded another man of 30,000 yuan using similar tactics, and all her claims of wealth were fabricated. The Heping district court in Tianjin found Li guilty of fraud, sentencing her to 42 months in jail and a fine.
While the "marriage bed burning" was a scam, traditional Chinese marriage rituals do involve various superstitions about the marriage bed, such as the taboo against anyone using it before the wedding day to avoid bad luck.
