A father in Shanxi province, China, has ignited online debate after uploading a video of his six-year-old daughter, who had been bullied to the point of suffering a bleeding mouth and losing a tooth. The man's response to the incident has been questioned, as he declared he would not pursue accountability from the bullies or the school.
The father, from a county in central China, shared the distressing video on his Douyin account, @huodarensheng, showing his daughter expressing a desire to "quit school" after being cornered by classmates. Despite the severity of the situation, the father reacted with unusual calmness, deleting the initial video and posting a follow-up on October 16.
In the new video, he mentioned that the school and "relevant departments" had addressed the issue, and the seven bullies and their parents had apologized to his daughter. He chose not to hold the school responsible, arguing that parents are primarily accountable for their children's education and deciding against seeking compensation from the parents.
The father did not provide detailed reasoning but implied that in a small community of 210,000 residents, making enemies could be unwise. He also noted that children aged seven to eight are not criminally responsible under Chinese law, deeming further pursuit "meaningless."
The age of criminal responsibility in China is 16, with minors over 12 held accountable only for serious offenses like intentional homicide or injury, subject to approval by the Supreme People's Procuratorate. The school and local government have not publicly responded to the incident.
The father intends to keep his daughter in the same school and class. In a video released on October 17, he asked her if she wanted to transfer, to which she firmly replied "no," preferring not to attend an "unfamiliar" school. He praised her as "strong-minded and capable of making her own decisions."
Online observers criticized the father for his "cold" response, with some accusing him of failing to protect his daughter and suggesting that inaction could embolden the bullies. The incident has highlighted the complexities of addressing bullying in small communities and the challenges parents face in seeking justice for their children.
