Frequent Injuries at SH's Indoor Ski Resort: Skier Got Finger Severed

On September 1, a man suffered a severe hand injury while skiing at Shanghai YaoXue Snow World, the largest indoor ski resort that still in its trial phase. According to a social media post, the man had already slowed down when he was struck by another skier, a novice using dual skis. The collision resulted in the man's finger being severely cut by the ski blade, and he was immediately taken to the hospital for treatment, where his finger was reattached.

The incident sparked criticism from the victim's girlfriend, who questioned the management and safety protocols of YaoXue Snow World. She raised concerns about the lack of a designated beginner area, which forced inexperienced skiers onto more difficult slopes. She also highlighted issues such as unsafe course design and inadequate emergency response.

In response, YaoXue Snow World issued a statement on September 2, providing a detailed account of the incident. They confirmed that the man's injury occurred on one of the slopes and that ski patrol and medical staff were quick to respond. The injured man was transferred to the facility's medical room, where he received first aid before being sent to the hospital by ambulance.

The statement also clarified that the ski resort has purchased accident insurance for all visitors and that the injured party would be assisted with filing insurance claims after treatment. Regarding safety measures, YaoXue Snow World pointed out that there were already visible warning signs indicating that some slopes were not suitable for beginners. However, due to frequent incidents during the trial phase, the resort plans to strengthen its safety protocols, including setting up more visible warnings and creating safer practice areas for beginners without additional costs.

It is reported that YaoXue Snow World has four main ski slopes:

  • The green slope is a beginner's course, 61 meters long with a maximum incline of 8 degrees, primarily used for the ski school.

  • The red and black slopes are designed for intermediate and advanced skiers.

  • The blue slope, also known as the "S slope," is 460 meters long, the most popular route, but also the area where collisions occur frequently.

However, because access to the green slope requires hiring a coach, and one-on-one coaching sessions are quite expensive, many beginners choose to skip the green slope and go directly to the blue slope. This has been identified as one of the main reasons for the frequent accidents during the trial operation phase.

Reports from social media reveal that this is not an isolated case. Other visitors have shared their experiences of being injured, with some even requiring hospital visits. One user humorously remarked that the proximity of YaoXue Snow World to a nearby hospital was no coincidence, given the frequency of accidents.
