Video of women scolding toddler on plane sparks debate

A video of two women scolding a crying toddler in an airplane bathroom on a Juneyao Airlines flight has sparked a heated debate on social media in China. The incident, which took place on a flight from Guiyang to Shanghai, involved the women attempting to calm the child, who was traveling with her grandparents, using stern measures.

The airline initiated an internal investigation and contacted the child's mother, who understood the situation after hearing the grandmother's account. The video, reportedly filmed by one of the women involved, showed the child being told she could only leave the bathroom if she stopped crying, with the woman threatening to leave her there otherwise.

The incident has prompted discussions on the proper way to handle distressed children in public spaces. While some netizens argued that the women's actions were acceptable to maintain flight comfort, others called for greater empathy and patience.

Guo Xiamei, a psychology professor at Xiamen University, noted that the child's behavior was age-appropriate and criticized both the grandparents for allowing strangers to discipline the child and the women for their approach.

Guo suggested that airlines could better cater to young passengers by providing comfort items. She emphasized that tolerance toward children reflects a society's compassion and moral standards.
