To protect privacy, Wechat deletes certain old unread messages。

A netizen recently posted on social media, asserting that WeChat may mechanically delete unread messages older than three days. Tencent customer service responded by clarifying that all images, videos, files, text, voice messages, and emojis received and viewed during WeChat chats remain permanently on the current device and are viewable indefinitely.

Nevertheless, there are three potential scenarios in which related records may become inaccessible. One of these scenarios involves the automatic storage of unanswered messages on WeChat's servers for a period of three days. WeChat routinely deletes these messages after three days, rendering them irretrievable.

Additionally, Tencent customer service underscored that chat records contain confidential privacy information, and WeChat's servers do not retain any of the user's chat history. If users delete their data without backing it up, they cannot recover it. Therefore, users should prioritise the preservation and backup of conversation records to avoid the loss of crucial information.
