Shanghai Embracing 3 Days of 40°C Heat, How Long Will Heat Wave Last?
On the afternoon of August 2, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau announced that we have just experienced one of the hottest nights in history. In the early morning, the minimum temperature at the Xujiahui Station was 32.1°C, tying the record for the highest minimum temperature ever recorded at this station.
Today's heat continues to surge, with temperatures across most areas already exceeding 30°C in the early morning. The high-temperature warning is being issued earlier each day. This morning at 7:20 AM, an orange high-temperature warning signal was issued, which was upgraded to a red warning signal at 12:20 PM.
Meteorological experts have noted that such prolonged and continuous heatwaves are rare in Shanghai's history, comparable only to those in 1934, 2013, 2017, and 2022.
Shanghai Hits the "Hottest in the Nation"
Yesterday, for the first time in two years, the Shanghai Central Meteorological Observatory issued a high-temperature red warning signal. This was also the first high-temperature red warning signal of this summer, with the temperature at the Xujiahui Station reaching 40°C. In Shanghai's 152-year meteorological history, days with temperatures reaching 40°C are extremely rare. Meteorological data shows that since 1873, Xujiahui Station has recorded temperatures of 40°C on 22 occasions, with the highest being 40.9°C on July 21, 2017, and July 13, 2022.
At 8 AM today, Shanghai's temperature soared to a new height, quickly reaching the top of the national temperature rankings. By 10 AM, the temperature at the Xujiahui Station had reached 38.1°C, more than 1°C higher than the same time yesterday, firmly placing it at the top of the 2,418 national-level meteorological stations. Furthermore, Xujiahui Station, along with two national-level meteorological stations in Pudong and Minhang, claimed the top three spots in the high-temperature rankings.
At 1:31 PM, Shanghai once again reached 40°C.
Heatwave Continues with No End in Sight
Notably, at 1:10 PM, the Pudong New Area Meteorological Observatory issued a yellow lightning warning signal, indicating that the southeastern corner of Pudong was experiencing heavy rainfall.
However, the heatwave is expected to persist. Forecasts predict that in the next ten days, due to the strong influence of the subtropical high pressure system, Shanghai's daily maximum temperature will remain above 38°C.
During the weekend, the intense heat will continue, with the highest temperatures hovering around 40°C.
In the later part of next week, the subtropical high pressure is expected to weaken slightly, increasing the possibility of scattered thunderstorms, but temperatures will remain high, with extreme maximum temperatures still reaching 39°C.
Heatwave Increases Risk of Heatstroke
Meteorological experts remind that the high heat can easily lead to heatstroke. Residents are advised to avoid going out during high-temperature periods and to use air conditioning and fans wisely to prevent heatstroke. Heatstroke refers to the condition where the body's temperature regulation fails under prolonged exposure to high temperature and heat radiation, causing symptoms of electrolyte imbalance and nervous system dysfunction. Heatstroke is a type of acute illness caused by the disruption of heat balance, with heat stroke being the most severe form of heatstroke.
