Revealed: How Much Do Foreign Tourists Spend Daily in China?
On August 19, the National Immigration Administration released the latest statistics showing a significant increase in foreign arrivals. From January to July this year, 17.25 million foreigners entered China, marking a 129.9% increase compared to the same period last year. It's estimated that these visitors will contribute over 100 billion RMB to the economy through tourism-related spending.
According to Dai Bin, President of the China Tourism Academy, the recent growth in foreign tourist numbers can be largely attributed to more relaxed visa policies, such as the 144-hour visa-free transit and mutual visa exemptions. These policies have made it easier for travelers to visit China, allowing for more seamless and frequent travel.
Data from the China Tourism Academy reveals that foreign tourists in China spend an average of 3,459 RMB per day. The largest chunk of this spending—about 25%—goes towards shopping. Accommodation is the second biggest expense, followed by dining. Other expenses include local transportation, entertainment, and communication.
Dai highlights two crucial areas where China could enhance its appeal to international visitors. First, he suggests improving the quality and diversity of experiences available to foreign tourists. This includes offering more engaging and unique activities that showcase China's rich culture and history. Second, he emphasizes the importance of continuously refining how China presents its narrative to the global audience, ensuring it resonates with and attracts more tourists.
