Immigration authorities detained eight people on Tuesday, including a Burundian national, on suspicion of facilitating the entry of African individuals into Korea by issuing fraudulent invitations.
According to the Incheon Airport Immigration Office and Foreigner's Office, a 64-year-old Korean individual allegedly received 5 million won (approximately 26,000 yuan) from the Burundian national in exchange for distributing fabricated invitations to ten Burundians.
The prosecution has formally apprehended the Burundian broker, who previously worked for the Korean individual's electrical parts firm. The prosecution received referrals from three other individuals without any physical detention.
Officials have also referred a 28-year-old Korean individual and three others to the prosecution on charges of falsely inviting 40 Ethiopian individuals through paper companies in exchange for $500 per person.
Officials have added a broker from Ethiopia to the wanted list.
In response to an increase in the number of African nationals denied entry to Korea for failing to provide a valid reason for their visit, the immigration office initiated an inquiry into the matter.
"We plan to expand the investigation into those behind the false invitations and brokers involved and request the diplomatic missions toughen the evaluation process for visa issuance," a representative of the immigration office reported.
