300+ Accounts Suspended for Inflammatory Remarks on Olympic Table Tennis

On August 4th, the official Weibo community management account "Weibo Administrator" released a statement. The announcement addressed the inflammatory and provocative behavior observed in discussions surrounding the Olympic table tennis events, resulting in the suspension of over 300 accounts.

Original Announcement:

Yesterday (August 3rd), the Chinese team dominated the women's singles finals in table tennis at the 2024 Paris Olympics, winning both gold and silver medals. The two Chinese athletes delivered an extraordinary performance, showcasing their skills and hard work to fans worldwide. They are a source of immense pride for China. However, during the match, some spectators' irrational behavior sparked debates online. A few users exploited the situation by sharing malicious and provocative content from outside the platform, including irrational comments attacking athletes and coaching staff. The platform has taken stringent measures in response.

According to the "Weibo Community Convention" and related regulations, the platform has removed over 12,000 pieces of content violating community guidelines within the past two days. Additionally, more than 300 offending accounts have been subjected to varying degrees of suspension, ranging from temporary to permanent bans.

In the announcement, Weibo emphasized that every athlete striving for national glory deserves our respect. Baseless speculation, mutual slander, and even invasions of athletes' privacy are harmful to both the athletes and China's sports industry. Weibo once again urges all users to focus on the games, engage in rational discussions, and avoid inflammatory behavior. Respecting the hard work of every athlete and embracing the spirit of perseverance, teamwork, and sportsmanship in competitive sports is the proper way to support them. The platform will continue to strengthen its efforts to detect and address various violations.
