Grieving Woman Plans Ghost Wedding for Lover She Failed to Save from Accident
A woman in Taiwan who rescued three people from the wreckage of a car accident but couldn't save her boyfriend will hold a ghost marriage to support his grieving mother.
On July 15, a four-car collision on a highway in Taiwan resulted in two deaths and five injuries.
Two siblings, named Hong, were trapped inside their vehicle. They were taken to the hospital but did not survive their injuries.
One of the siblings' girlfriends, surnamed Yu, was also in the car.
She described the anguish of seeing her boyfriend, his sister, and another friend trapped in the wreckage.
Despite her leg injuries, Yu tried her best to save them but was unable to. She managed to pull a friend from the back seat and rescue two passengers from another car involved in the crash.
Although she saved three people, Yu said her biggest regret was not being able to save her boyfriend and his sister, according to Taiwanese news network ETtoday.
To honor her boyfriend, Yu plans to hold a ghost marriage with him and care for his elderly mother on his behalf.
Ghost marriages for the deceased are a 3,000-year-old custom in China.
Some elders believe that if people die without fulfilling wishes like marriage, they won't find peace in the afterlife.
In a ghost marriage, the living participant uses the deceased's photo, clothes, and other items to represent them. The ceremony follows traditional wedding customs.
Yu's story has moved many on social media.
"This brave woman thinking of saving others in a crisis is remarkable," commented someone on Instagram.
"Her sense of responsibility and love for her boyfriend and his family is touching. Ghost marriage can offer spiritual comfort," said another.
