Nike Ad Featuring Athlete Licking Table Tennis Paddle Sparks Debate in China

On July 19, Nike released a new promotional video on its Chinese website featuring an athlete licking a table tennis paddle. The scene quickly ignited a heated debate among netizens, with the topic reaching the top of Weibo's trending list on July 23.

Some netizens criticized the ad, deeming the scene inappropriate and suggesting it might be a deliberate move by Nike against China. Comments such as "A very strange shooting technique, why not just kiss the paddle instead?" and "Obviously intentional, who doesn't know we are number one in table tennis?" reflected this sentiment.

Conversely, other netizens considered the uproar over the scene to be an overreaction. They argued that the ad should not be taken so seriously. Comments like "It's just taunting the opponent, no need to make a big deal out of it" and "They can film however they like" exemplified this perspective.

On July 22, journalists contacted Nike's official hotline. The representative who answered the call stated that the issue would be reported to the relevant department, and the specific resolution would be communicated after the department's review.
