CN Zoo Hires "Wild Men" for ¥500/Day? One Denies, But Some Did...
On July 18, a poster from Guangzhou Zoo recruiting actors to play the role of wild men went viral online. This sparked a flurry of discussions among netizens. This poster claimed, "No talking allowed, only 'oohs' and 'aahs'. Meals not provided; you can forage for wild food in the mountains or even take food from visitors, but not their belongings. Please keep an eye on your wild food, as visitors might try to take it too!"
In response, reporters immediately contacted Guangzhou Zoo. The zoo stated that this information is false, and they have received public inquiries through online platforms. They urge everyone not to believe such rumors.
Despite the clarification from Guangzhou Zoo, there has been previous controversy surrounding a 4A-level scenic spot recruiting "wild men."
According to earlier reports, a video was shared on social media platforms showing people working part-time as "wild men" at a scenic spot. In the video, six individuals dressed as wild men repeatedly slapped their lips, making "ooh ooh ooh" sounds reminiscent of wild men, and interacted with visitors in various ways.

The scenic spot in question is the Benxi Guan Mountain Lake Scenic Area, located in Benxi Manchu Autonomous County, Liaoning Province, a nationally rated 4A tourist attraction.
On July 10th, reporters contacted Mr. Zhao (a pseudonym), who is responsible for recruiting wild men at the scenic spot. He explained that some of the actors at the scenic spot are from the Wa ethnic group in Yunnan, who play the leading roles, while the rest are recruited as extras. "Initially, there were few wild men actors, which hindered interaction with visitors. Therefore, leveraging the theme of the scenic spot, we posted videos related to wild men to promote the attraction and give potential applicants a direct view of the work content and environment."
Mr. Zhao mentioned that the recruitment posted in April "was long filled." They initially planned to hire ten people, but later recruited 14 due to the positive feedback and the need for actors to take shifts.
When asked about the requirements for the job, he said that the first criterion is full-time availability – it's not a role for short-term experience. The scenic spot operates from April 1st to the end of October each year. The second requirement is having a performance background. He explained that the job mainly involves interacting with visitors after putting on makeup and performing in role-playing scenes, with approximately three to four performances a day.
The work hours are from "8 AM to 5 PM," with night shows from Friday to Sunday. "The job of a wild man is quite demanding, with a heavy workload," he noted, adding that many people get exhausted after just an hour or two.
According to him, the salary for wild men is 5,000 yuan per month. Typically, meals are not provided, but since all staff need to eat, they generally order box lunches, costing 12 yuan per meal, which employees must purchase themselves if needed.
Moreover, contrary to some media reports, staff clarified that the notion that wild men actors could snatch visitors' lunches is untrue.
Additionally, a previous report mentioned that Shennongjia Scenic Area in Hubei also posted a job offering 6,000 yuan per month for animal observers, with the requirement that they "must be in good health and able to run quickly if they encounter a wild man," drawing attention from netizens. Shennongjia Scenic Area confirmed the authenticity of this job posting.
