2 Martial Arts Coaches Sentenced to Life for Beating 8yo Boy to Death
In a recent judgment by the Qingdao Intermediate People's Court, two martial arts coaches, Zhang Xianbin and Li Haiding, received life sentences for causing the death of a young boy through intentional injury, coupled with a lifetime deprivation of political rights. A third defendant, Zhang Jiahao, received a lighter sentence of three years with a subsequent five-year probation for his role in the incident.
The court revealed that in June 2023, the victim, a boy surnamed Zhai born in 2014, joined a martial arts club operated by Zhang Xianbin. Merely a week into his training, Zhai was physically abused and restrained by the three defendants for failing to execute the exercises correctly, which tragically led to his death. The subsequent forensic analysis confirmed that Zhai died from severe blunt force injuries that resulted in traumatic shock and a fatal pulmonary fat embolism.
Following the incident, Zhang Xianbin reported the situation to the police and all three defendants admitted to their actions under interrogation. The court's decision highlighted the deliberate and prolonged nature of the abuse, noting the cruelty of the methods employed and the grave societal impact of their actions, thereby warranting severe legal consequences.
While Zhang and Li have challenged the court's ruling by filing appeals, Zhang Jiahao accepted his sentence. The family of the deceased has expressed dissatisfaction with the outcome and is also seeking to appeal the decision.
