The World Health Organization (WHO) says 102 potential Covid-19 vaccines are in development around the world, according to documents posted on the organizations website.

Eight of the potential vaccines are approved for clinical trials. That is up from seven vaccines four days ago. The additional group is from China, but it is unclear if they have started trials on human study subjects the other seven have.

Of the groups approved for clinical trials on humans, four are from China, one is from England, one is American and another is a combined American and European group.

The American National Institutes of Health (NIH) trial was the first to start testing in human trial subjects on March 16.

"COVID toes" and Other Skin Symptoms May be a Sign of Coronavirus

There is still much to learn about the novel coronavirus, including a wide range of symptoms that appears to be expanding. Common symptoms of the respiratory illness include fever, cough, shortness of breath and chills, but some doctors have reported less obvious symptoms in some patients including what some are calling "COVID toes" and other skin ailments.

Esther Freeman, director of Global Health & Dermatology at Massachusetts General Hospital and an assistant professor a Harvard Medical School, said "COVID toe" cases look similar to pernio or chilblains, a condition of inflamed blood vessels caused by cold temperatures.

"We're seeing this inflammatory response that we would normally see when someone was exposed to the cold temperature... like someone who has been playing outside with wet socks," Freeman told CBS News. "However, in this setting, we're seeing it in warm climates and we're seeing it in patients who have been indoors and sheltering in place."

Freeman said it's not unusual for a virus to cause a rash, so most dermatologists aren't surprised that COVID-19 could cause skin symptoms. "What is surprising to me are these 'COVID toes,' these pernio-like lesions...because we haven't seen as many reports of these in other viruses."

Freeman said "COVID toes" have been seen in both children and adults. Sometimes they are the only symptom the patient is experiencing. Freeman said it is important to be cautious because some "COVID toe" patients might still be infectious.

A team of dermatologists from Brussels, Belgium and and Portland, Oregon have also studied toe and skin infections in relation to COVID-19. In a case report published in JAAD, they say it's important for dermatologists to recognize the signs.

Man Causes 115 People to be Quarantined After...

Source: OT-Team(AFJ)

On April 28, news was released about a close contact of one confirmed case of COVID-19 in Tiandeng County, Guangxi, named Xu, dined with nearly 115 villagers in his hometown on Monday, and led all of them to undergo a 14-day home-based isolation, which caused the public to complain.

The Announcement

Unexpectedly Informed by Police

Per the news staff, Xu stayed in a hotel in Zengcheng District of Guangzhou on April 12 and 19 and then returned to his hometown to attend a funeral of a family member on Monday. Actually, he had no idea of that he had already contacted with a confirmed case at that time until he got a phone call from the Guangzhou public security bureau. Then he told his village committee and began home-based isolation without delay.

As of now, according to the Guangxi CDC, they are still searching for the people who have taken the bus with the license plate number of Gui F61790 (F61790) at 15:30 on April 27, if someone does, please report to your community immediately.

Dos and Don'ts During Hoildays

Thus, during the May Day Holiday, when the total number of passengers is expected to exceed 117 million, how can each person travel safely? Here are some suggestions from the Sate Council.

Everyone should take the nearby tourist attractions where no recent cases of COVID-19 have been reported as his/her first choice. And avoid the hot spots and the rush hour of any place; if someone really wants to go to the trans-regional attractions, he/she must contact the scenic spots in advance to learn about local epidemic prevention policies, and prepare enough masks and disinfection supplies.

Each person must wear a good mask all the way, mind personal hand hygiene, reduce the number of meals when on planes, trains or other means of transportation.

More importantly, everyone shall properly keep the tickets and bills for reference.

Choose a hotel with good sanitary conditions and open all the windows at once after check-in.

In the scenic spot, each person must keep a social distance of more than one meter from others. And its ideal for choosing the takeout food. However, if some have to dine in the restaurant, it is recommended to sit at intervals or eat on the same side, and avoid touching public facilities as much as possible.

Avoid attending any kind of dinner party. Everyone needs to use public chopsticks and spoons even if eating with their family.

Foreigner Stays & Helps Families to Deal With Outbreak!

Source: China Daily

One foreign resident of Tianjin hasn't left town since the outbreak of the coronavirus epidemic.

Jeanne Riether works at home as a public welfare adviser for the Cathay Future Culture and Art Foundation. In fact, she has worked harder and kept busier than ever in the past three months.

Riether, from the United States, is on a mission to encourage local families and co-workers in China to build stronger bonds through the changes brought to society by COVID-19.

To promote that goal, the author, humanitarian worker and teacher, who was nominated for the 2017 Haihe Friendship Award, has been writing columns, teaching online classes, creating TV shows, writing books and telling stories for children on WeChat accounts.

Through multimedia channels and in all her interviews and columnswhich she contributes to the iTianjin WeChat account for foreigners in the city, and the popular Tianjin online talk show Vivian Speakingshe expresses her concern for families and offers professional advice.

"This has been an extremely stressful time for families, especially those caring for young children," she said. "Families need all the help they can get, so whatever we can do to make it easier for them should be our priority."

One of Riether's projects involved recording English storybooks for students at Cathay Future Global Language Village.

"Parents like their children to keep up their English listening practice, even if they can't come to class. And the picture books help young children learn that reading can be fun and interesting. I've heard positive feedback from both parents and kids."

Riether has lived and worked for nearly 40 years in Asia. For 23 of those years, she has been involved in writing and promoting volunteer work in Harbin, Chongqing, Chengdu and Tianjin.

Twenty thousand copies of her book Healing Young Hearts: A Practical Handbook of Teaching Material for Disaster Recovery were donated to teachers and volunteers working with children after the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake.

In recent years, the Healing Young Hearts Project was also launched in Tianjin through the Cathay Future Culture and Art Foundation. The project promotes volunteer activities helping children undergo treatment for cancer and in other challenging circumstances.

During the epidemic period, employees of the foundation have continued working from home under her leadership to create materials to support the emotional wellbeing of children in migrant families.

When completed, the materials will be offered free to volunteers and teachers working with migrant and left-behind children, Riether said.

In an interview with China Daily, Riether was asked how parents can help their children during their extended time away from school and social activities.

"I especially hope parents will take this opportunity to tell their children stories about their own family, and pass on some of their family history," she said.

It's especially valuable for children to hear stories of how their own family faced hardships in the past and managed to overcome their difficulties, she said. It helps children build emotional resilience.

"People don't always recognize the importance of stories. But someday, the young children of today will be grown and have children of their own. They will tell their children about the epidemic of 2020, what a struggle it wasbut also how we all pulled through it together. The stories we tell our children today will make the families of tomorrow stronger."

Expats Shed Weight for Sheltered Dogs in China!

Source: China Daily, James Skinner

Charity fundraiser sees animal lovers working up a sweat to raise money for the forsaken pups of Suzhou and Wuxi, James Skinner reports.

While minds have understandably been focused on the recent COVID-19 outbreak, a kindhearted bunch of expats in Jiangsu province hasn't forgotten the plight of China's many homeless dogs.

The group are running a 60-day charity weight loss fundraiser for animals living in two shelters-the Suzhou Animal Protection Association and Wuxi's Second Chance Animal Rescue Society, with the challenge having started on April 20.

It's the second year in a row that the fundraiser has been held, with the organizers hoping to raise enough cash to continue the shelters' vital work.

Last year, the group raised over 45,000 yuan ($6,360) through a weight loss challenge and sponsored dog walk.

Participants in this year's event have to pay 100 yuan to take part and must send in their current weight once a week. They can also compete in regular exercise challenges, with a host of prizes on offer.

Canadian expat Heather Bijloos, 44, has lived in Wuxi for the past eight years and is helping to run this year's event.

"I first got into this after rescuing several homeless dogs from the streets," she says. "If they were injured or sick, I would get them healthy again before trying to re-home them, although some of them became permanent family members."

Later, she was approached by someone who asked if she could help run SCARS.

"The first time I visited the shelter, I ended up adopting a dog straight away," Bijloos says.

The mother-of-two has been involved with the shelter and rescue work ever since, becoming one of a handful of "go-to" locals who regularly get contacted to help rescue animals.

Both shelters are currently under immense financial pressure, with SAPA now home to a staggering 1,000 dogs. They are expensive to run, and rely entirely on donations to survive. And while volunteers do an enormous amount of work, full-time staff are still needed to feed and care for the animals.

The idea of raising money through a weight loss challenge was the brainchild of Marie Willman, a 34-year-old Canadian woman living in Suzhou.

"I never expected it to become this big," she says. "I thought maybe 20 or 30 people would sign up to the first one and that would be it."

But her expectations were quickly surpassed, with an incredible 136 people taking part in last year's event, raising 13,600 yuan.

"This year, I'd be thrilled if we could get 200 participants-it would really help raise public awareness."

With public fundraising activities difficult to organize this year due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the role of corporate sponsors in the challenge is especially important. So far, more than 65 businesses have signed up to donate cash and prizes, enabling the organizers to raise a significant amount of money.

William Shipton-Jiang, 40, is a partner in Shanghai-based Breakfast Champion, a popular supplier of Western breakfast meats. His firm is one of the corporate sponsors supporting this year's event.

"I have lived in Ningbo for the past eight years, and in that time I've personally rescued five dogs and 10 cats-at one time I even had nine cats and a dog in my flat," he says.

"Two of us here at the company have been doing our own weight loss challenge recently, so when we were approached to be sponsors for the challenge it seemed like a natural fit for us."

Tamura Noriko, 47, a Japanese expat living in Wuxi, is also assisting with this year's event. She spends her time helping to run SCARS and was particularly keen on the idea of a weight loss challenge, feeling that it would be an appropriate way to fundraise at a time when many are still practicing social distancing.

"I think losing weight is one of the few things people can do together without actually getting together, and with many like-minded people doing it for a cause they care about, it provides them with extra motivation," she says.

While the weight loss challenge might sound like a bit of fun to many, it has a serious purpose behind it, and the organizers are keen to stress that it isn't just about raising awareness today-it's about changing attitudes for tomorrow.

"This is a way to make the community more aware-to educate people, to let them know we're here and can help, and to encourage people to properly care for their pets," says Bijloos.

Explainer: How May 1 Became International Workers' Day

By Ryan Kilpatrick

The Explainer is where we explain an aspect of Chinese life. Simple. So now you know.

It may seem like the most socialist red letter day on the calendar, but May 1 International Workers Day, celebrated as a holiday in China, does not have its roots in the Middle Kingdom, nor the Communist Bloc. Instead, it can be traced back to 1880s and the American Midwest.

On May 4, 1886, Chicago police were trying to break up a rally in support of workers striking for an eight-hour day when a dynamite bomb was thrown into their ranks. The explosion and ensuing gunfire killed seven police officers and at least four civilians, while scores more were injured.

Four labor activists and anarchists were later hanged for the bombing, despite the absence of any credible evidence. (What was lacking in evidence, however, was more than made up for with in public hysteria, packed juries and biased, partisan judges.)

The miscarriage of justice was a boon for the labor movement. The Knights of Labor doubled their membership within a year, and the struggle for a shorter working day was renewed on a national level.

In 1889, the Second International convened in Paris and declared May 1 International Workers' Day to commemorate the Haymarket Martyrs, and took the eight-hour-day campaign worldwide.

Contemporary prints decrying the execution of the Haymarket Martyrs

By setting the date three days earlier than the event itself, the socialist movement was taking a leaf out of the churchs book, co-opting a pre-existing and ancient pagan festival celebrated across Europe to welcome summer. On the Chinese calendar, Lixia (literally "start of summer") fulfills the same purpose and typically falls on the same week as May Day.

Chinese people first celebrated International Workers Day in 1920, when Communist Party co-founders Chen Duxiu and Li Dazhao held May 1 assemblies with students and labor unions in Shanghai and Beijing, respectively. In December 1949, the newly founded Peoples Republic declared a one-day holiday on May 1 every year.

From 1999 to 2008, May 1 was elevated to a Golden Week holiday lasting a full seven days. In the decade following 2008, the holiday was limited to a single day off work.

But in 2020, the holiday has been stretched to five days, running from Friday, May 1 to Tuesday, May 5, while Sunday, April 26 and Saturday, May 9 are adjusted workdays this year.

And that is how, for the past 65 years, China has honored four Americans in a rebranded pagan ritual proclaimed in Paris.

READ MORE: Women's Day's Revolutionary Roots

Even with the collapse of the Soviet Bloc and global communism, International Workers Day still remains true to its name. In every continent of the world, it is celebrated to an extent far greater than Americas current Labor Day on the first Monday of September.

Fittingly, just as May 1 is Chinas favorite American holiday, Labor Day is Americas favorite Canadian holiday. Labor Day had been marked north of the border since the Toronto Typographical Unions successful strike for a 58-hour working week in 1872, before their southern neighbors took a shine to the celebration.

In 1894, US president Grover Cleveland adopted Canadian Labor Day as a rebuff to May 1, already co-opted, and gaining momentum, by the Socialist movement.

This Day in History: China Enacts New Marriage Law

By Ned Kelly

Marriage reform was one of the first priorities of the Peoples Republic of China on its establishment in 1949. Up until this time, Chinese marriages were often arranged or forced, concubinage was commonplace and women could not seek divorce.

On May 1, 1950 the New Marriage Law, or Xin Hunyin Fa , was enacted. Personally delivered by Mao Zedong, who famously declared Women hold up half the sky, the law provided a civil registry for legal marriages, raised the marriageable age to 20 for males and 18 for females and stipulated that marriage had to be mutually consensual.

It immediately helped implement land reform, as it outlawed the common practice of selling peasant women to landlords (sometimes before entering puberty). The radical change from existing patriarchal traditions required constant support from propaganda campaigns, with the official slogan being Men and women are equal; everyone is worth their salt.

The New Marriage Law was superseded by the Second Marriage Law of 1980, which introduced the one-child policy and instructed the courts to favor the interests of women and children in property distribution in divorce. Further updates in 1983 legalized marriage with foreigners and interracial marriage.

By Ned Kelly

Shanghai Culture and Tourism Administration have announced that all A-level tourist attractions in Shanghai will require reservation-for-admission over the May Holiday, reports Shine.

Those who fail to make reservations will be refused entry, while visitors should wear masks and prepare necessary certificates and their health QR codes for admission. Temperatures checks will also be in place.

The administration also told tourists to familiarize themselves with visitor quotas, ticket reservation and registration measures at the attractions they plan to visit, and advised them to avoid peak travel times.

Oh, and more than 80 million domestic tourists are expected over the long weekend, according to a recent report by travel giant Trip.com, with Shanghai gearing up for the largest influx.

All of which sounds very relaxing indeed. (A word to the wise: avoid A-level Shanghai tourist attractions over the May Holiday).

It's World Jianbing Day. Heres How to Celebrate in Shanghai

Did you know that today (April 30) is World Jianbing Day? Yep, its a thing.

Founded by the fine foodies at Shanghais very own UnTour Food Tours, World Jianbing Day celebrates all things jianbing.

Heres a handy overview of the big day from UnTour Chief Eating Officer, Jamie Barys:

World Jianbing Day is an annual event founded by UnTour Food Tours in 2019. The team at UnTour wanted to spread the love of jianbing around the world and celebrate its many forms. From the original found streetside to the modern and fusion jianbings that you can now find globally, we love them all!

Jianbing is a savory traditional Chinese crepe (but really isnt a crepe just a French jianbing?) with a fried egg and other fillings that is traditionally found streetside. Its origins can be traced to Tianjin and Shandong province, but it is loved around China and now, more than ever, around the world.

According to legends, jianbing was invented nearly 2,000 years ago during the Three Kingdoms period (220-280) by Zhuge Liang, a military strategist who was coincidentally the same guy who invented the mantou! He also supposedly invented landmines, so, I mean, he had his faults but culinary skills were ace.

Anyway, Zhuge Liang was faced with feeding an army of soldiers whod lost their woks after a quick retreat, so ordered the cooks to evenly mix water with wheat flour and spread the dough onto a shield suspended over a fire.

The dish lifted his soldiers morale and they fought their way out of an ambush. Take that story with a grain of salt (like most Chinese food histories) but I tell you, Id fight someone for a good jianbing.

Now that youre up to speed on this fabulous holiday, were sure youre hankering for a jianbing right about now. Heres what UnTour has planned for the second annual World Jianbing Day.
