Here's Some Adjusted Routes Chinese Airlines are Still Operating

By Rakini Bergundy

Last week, the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) announced that China would be drastically cutting passenger flights in an effort to contain a potential second wave of the coronavirus pandemic. As the number of confirmed cases continues to rise outside of China, CAAC ordered Chinese airlines to operate only one route per country, once a week. Three of the big four airlines have announced their adjusted routes via Weibo, which will be in effect until the end of April.

Air China

Air Chinas notice is in effect from March 29 until April 30. International flights from Beijing Capital (PEK) will head to 17 countries across North America, Europe and Asia. Flights originating from Shanghai Pudong (PVG) will have routes to Germany, England, Thailand, Singapore and Japan. Lastly, there is one route from Chengdu to Nepal.

China Eastern Airlines

China Eastern Airlines new routes operate from March 29 until May 2. The majority of routes (except for one) will start from Shanghai Pudong (PVG) and fly to countries in Southeast Asia, Asia, Australia, Europe and North America.

China Southern Airlines

The airlines adjusted routes are in effect from March 29 to May 2. Guangzhou Baiyun is the main hub where flights will leave from, and routes will serve 15 countries across Europe, North America, Australia, New Zealand, Southeast Asia and South Asia. Flights to Korea and Japan are only available from Shenyang, Liaoning province.

There are still multiple smaller Chinese airlines flying their own routes, so be sure to check on those carriers official pages, such as Weibo, for more schedules.

These New Subway Regulations Coming into Effect on April 1st!

China will ban incivilities including eating, begging, and peddling on the subway effective Wednesday, April 1, 2020, according to a new regulation, which also prohibits littering and busking in carriages.

"Behaviors such as begging and peddling disrupt the public order and compromise commuters public transport experience. They tend to cause passenger disputes, especially during peak, rush hours, said Wang Xiuchun, an official with the Ministry of Transport.

Mainland China's urban rail transit system has developed rapidly in recent years. By the end of 2018, 171 rail transit lines had been put into operation in 35 cities in 24 provincial-level regions.

In these new regulations, 10 types of prohibited behaviors are listed to protect commuter safety, as well as 7 additional types that affect the order.

(1) Disturbing or stopping the train's course; pushing and forcing your way on or off the subway car when the alarm rings, or trying to open the train door/platform door once it's already closed.

(2) Sounding alarms or operating buttons and switches with warning signs not to use them without authorization, and using emergency or safety devices in a non-emergency state.

(3) Carrying toxic, harmful, inflammable, explosive, radioactive, corrosive and other dangerous items that may endanger the safety of commuters and cause damages to any property inside the subway station or on the train.

(4) Fare evasion by jumping the subway turnstile, guardrail, protective net, or through the platform door without authorization, as well as walking on the track, tunnel or other areas with warning signs.

(5) Throwing objects onto rail transit lines, trains, and other facilities.

(6) Damaging vehicles, platform doors, automatic ticket vending machines and other equipment, communication signals, and video monitoring systems.

(7) Damaging, moving, or covering safety signs, monitoring facilities and other safety protection equipment.

(8) Starting a fire inside the train station or on the train.

9) Going up the escalators the wrong way or pushing other commuters.

(10) Interfering with the safety of operations.

If a commuter refuses to comply with any of the above-listed regulations, the train operator or subway staff have the right to hold him accountable and call the police.

However, if the commuter believes he or she has been apprehended wrongfully, they should report it immediately.

Below are another 7 behaviors to watch out for:

(1)Scrawling, carving, or posting/hanging things in the station or train without authorization.

(2) Carrying animals (excluding guide dogs and military police dogs) inside the station and onto the train that may be bringing a pungent smell with them.

(3) Selling products or engaging in marketing activities, begging, busking, singing, and dancing loudly, and using speakers to do so (without headphones).

(4) Operating vehicles, including bicycles (excluding disabled mopeds), skateboards, and skates.

(5) Eating on the train (except for infants and medical patients).

6) Spitting, defecating, throwing gum, fruits, litter and other waste, lying down, or trampling on public seats.

(7) Any other act that may disturb the commuting comfort and safety of others.

Please be mindful of others when taking the subway, and remember that eating on the train is not allowed. So if youre rushing to work and didnt have time for breakfast, you might have to wait a few extra minutes until youre outside to grab a bite!

And please do not watch your favorite shows or music videos without headphones on. Not everyone on the train wants to hear them.

This Platform Connects 490 Medics From 109 Countries to Aid

Online platforms have become an important channel for doctors across the globe to join hands in our fight against the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

In total, over 490 medical institutions from 109 countries and regions have applied to join the Global MediXchange for Combating COVID-19 (GMCC) program -- an online platform jointly set up by the Jack Ma Foundation and Alibaba Foundation -- to fight against the coronavirus epidemic.

Most are medical institutions and practitioners in the United States, Turkey, Britain, Pakistan, Spain and Germany.

Designed for medics around the world to communicate and share experiences on treating patients infected by COVID-19, GMCC provides doctors with free teleconferencing and live chat features.

Medical practitioners can either communicate directly between one another in one-to-one or group chats with the help of an artificially intelligent translator that can interpret and translate 11 languages in real-time. Doctors at the First Hospital of Zhejiang Province, for instance, have shared wits with medics from 44 countries on the platform so far.

The teleconferences can also be replayed to facilitate those recuperating from jet lag. "Knowledge is power! Jack Ma tweeted a few days ago. We launched an online platform for doctors and nurses around the world to exchange ideas, lessons and know-how to fight the virus. We welcome all hospitals to join Chinese hospitals on this open platform.

To date, numerous Chinese medical institutions on the frontline of China's anti-epidemic fight have joined the platform, including Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University, which now takes charge of the Wuhan Leishenshan Hospital -- a makeshift hospital built in less than two weeks to treat COVID-10 patients.

Offered free of charge as part of the program, a handbook on the prevention and treatment of COVID-19, compiled by China's frontline medics, is available online. providing comprehensive guidelines by China's top health experts in treating COVID-19.

It is now available in 14 languages, including Chinese, English, French, Italian, Spanish, German, Japanese, Persian, Indonesian and Serbian, with other versions in more languages currently under translation and expected to be put up online soon.

One world, one fight.

Shanghai to Roll Out Convention Promoting Public Health

Shanghai has drafted a convention with 12 dos and 12 don'ts in promotion of public health and call on its 24 million residents to lead a healthier life, local authorities said at a press conference Monday.

Behaviors including wearing masks, practicing social distancing, conducting regular health checkups and receiving vaccinations are encouraged in the draft of the convention.

Spitting, littering, overeating, staying up late and consuming excessive amounts of alcohol are among the behaviors to be discouraged.

Wang Tong, deputy director of the Office of Shanghai Municipal Health Promotion Committee, said many of the recommended behaviors, like mask-wearing and frequent hand-washing, have been proved effective in containing the spread of COVID-19.

More than 25,000 restaurants in Shanghai, including 100 time-honored brands, expressed their support for the use of serving chopsticks and spoons, which was also favored by 92 percent of Shanghai responders, Wang added.

The draft convention will be open for suggestions and opinions from the public until April 7.

3 Inspiring Stories of Entrepreneurship in China

Are you interested in building your own business in China, but feel too overwhelmed to get started? We talked to three successful foreign entrepreneurs in China about their journey to making their dreams come true, from coming up with a simple idea to developing a business from the ground up.01Rachel Gouk - NomfluenceRachel Gouk grew up in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and went to college in New Jersey, USA. She originally planned to do journalism in the US, but discovered that jobs were scarce. She took her first paying offer in Shanghai in 2011 and has called it home ever since. After working her way up in the Shanghai lifestyle publication scene, she began freelancing and ended up working as the Deputy Editor for City Weekend (closed in Jan 2018). In May 2018 she started Nomfluence, a blog about the local food and beverage scene in Shanghai, and continued to develop it over the following year. In May 2019 she started her own company to do PR, marketing and photography, and run Nomfluence full time.Working for YourselfIm much happier and my lifestyle has changed for the better. I work from home most days churning out articles and helping my restaurant clients with their communications, media relations, social media postings, and branding. Its stressful at times, working for ones self, but I wouldnt trade it for anything. The blog certainly brings a lot of joy and satisfaction."Creating recipes is something new Im exploring on Nomfluence. This one is with products from The Good Food People, sobrassada pasta with parmesan." Photo by Rachel GoukI have a few stable clients for PR and marketing, and I supplement that with creative content on Nomfluence. Nomfluence is a platform where I share my views on where to eat and drink in Shanghai, but also to share information about deals, new openings, and help businesses kick start their venues. Ive been writing about F&B since I got here, and Id like to think Im able to tell a holistic story of each place I write about. There are so many channels out there for this, and the market is saturated, so growth of Nomfluence is slow but steady. For now, the blog isnt my main source of income, but it does require a lot of time and effort on my part. Thankfully, the reception for the content has been good!Dont Be Afraid to Ask For Help"If I was to give advice to someone that wants to start a business in China, I would say that you need a business plan and long-term goals, and business partners. I didnt really go into my business thinking of growth or to build something scalable. Thankfully, its adding up to something. But yeah, definitely think about long-term goals and how you can achieve them. And do sufficient recon about the sector you plan on going into. Oh, and dont be afraid to ask for help! Someone will pipe up. The popularity of WeChat groups has created these micro digital-only communities. People are very willing to share, that is, if you manage to spot a question you can answer in a sea of groups."Check out Nomfluence below!02Katie Tarrant - NAKEDKatie Tarrant is originally from the UK and moved to Beijing in 2010 after graduating from university. In 2016 she met her future business partner Meredith Sides, and together they began NAKED, a thriving nut butter company with its own factory in China. The company produces nut-based products, like almond butter, cashew butter, and peanut butter, and all products are completely vegan and all-natural (naked).Origins of NAKEDAfter Meredith and I became roommates, I discovered she had (and still has) an obsession with nut butter. At the time it wasnt possible to get the all-natural varieties she was used to buying in the US, so she would bring jars upon jars back with her each time she made a trip back home. I knew how to make it from scratch so together we started making it at home instead and laid to rest her days of smuggling nut butter across the Pacific. After we started making it for ourselves at home a friend suggested selling our homemade product at some craft markets and we thought wed give it a crack. Turned out that we had made the nut butter equivalent of crack and after that first market we had far more orders than we could handle.Developing the BusinessAbout a year later we obtained our business license and started talking to a Chinese NGO about cooperating with them on a project in a small village called Laohegou, in northern Sichuan. Shortly after we registered a WFOE, together with the NGO we started renovating an unused building that sat on the edge of a nature reserve into a small nut butter factory. We hired and trained some local villagers to work with us in the factory and the NGO helped us to work with the local farmers to grow the peanuts in an ecological way.It has been a very tough road so far and there is still a long way to go, but we are confident and most importantly we are still enjoying what we do. After setting up the factory, the first two years we focused on manufacturing and operations and now we feel confident in that side of the business so this year we are more focused on marketing and sales and bringing out new products.I told myself that I would just spend a year in China to top-up my Mandarin proficiency before embarking on a career back in the UK. Nine years later - and I am still here! The reasons to stay being so much greater than the ones to return home."Follow NAKED and shop their nut butters on WeChat by scanning the QR code below.03Olivia Cotes-James-LUNA naturalsOlivia Cotes-James is the founder and CEO of LUNA naturals, a social impact period care company. The company now has female-driven teams in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Singapore and London. Their mission? To make periods better; for our bodies, our planet and our sisters in need.Three Pillars"Our company is supported by three pillars. Firstly, the creation of healthier, more sustainable period products like our line of organic cotton tampons, pads and liners, as well as our 100% medical-grade silicone menstrual cup.Secondly, we deliver taboo-free educational content to corporates, schools and universities to empower girls and women with knowledge about their bodies.Lastly, with our social impact business model, every purchase funds the donations of products and education towards lifting vulnerable communities out of period poverty. Period poverty is when girls and women are unable to afford period care or have to use poor quality products for long periods of time. This means those from low income communities miss work and school every month or are exposed to the significant health dangers of unhygienic period care."Do Your ResearchIn 2016, when I found out that typical adoption rates for tampons was only 2% in Asian countries, I wanted to ensure more women could find the products that were right for them, unhindered by myths and taboos. What I came to learn is that for 1 in 4 women I spoke to, they did want to explore other options to pads. So I launched 'tampon workshops,' which were on one hand about busting the taboos around products like tampons, but also evolved into wider discussions around periods. To date, I have held more than 500 of these workshops, which are now given at schools, universities and corporate offices.I completed a year of research into menstrual stigma and product design before obtaining my business license in Shanghai in 2017. After this was done, I was able to launch into product design and concept testing, using my savings to fund this stage of the launch. After a bumpy ride, I finally closed our seed round at the end of 2019 and was able to bring my products and brand to market.Having the Shanghai startup ecosystem to support me during this time was invaluable. Whether it was for advice, connections or just other founders to listen to your tough moments, I will always be grateful for the close-knit community here who joined me on this journey. As a founder, there will always be personal lessons you have to learn on your own, but when it comes to navigating the necessary processes of setting up a business in China, dont waste time lean on those who have been there for advice and guidance."Last month LUNA naturals donated 7,000 organic cotton pads directly to medical staff across hospitals in Wuhan.
