Chinese lawmakers released a major decision to officially ban illegal wildlife trafficking while announcing strict measures against the consumption of wild animals to safeguard peoples health and that of animals.
The draft was submitted to Feb.24 Monday's bimonthly session of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, China's top legislature.
On February 3, General Secretary Xi stressed that relevant departments would need to strengthen law enforcement as well as market supervision; resolutely ban and crackdown on illegal wildlife markets and trafficking with adversely excessive consumptions and abuse of wild animals; and monitor major public health risks from the source. General Secretary Xi was in the standing committee of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee dealing with a novel coronavirus pneumonia pandemic research.
"We have long recognized the risks of consuming wildlife, but the 'industry' remains large and poses a major public health hazard, said one of the officials. No more indifference!
The NPC standing committee submitted and passed the decision.
