Construction of the Shanghai Grand Opera House, a new landmark of the metropolis, started Wednesday on the bank of the Huangpu River.
The opera house is designed with three auditoriums with 2,000 seats, 1,200 seats and 1,000 seats, respectively.
Following an international design competition, Snohetta, a Norwegian architectural design institution, has been commissioned to design the Shanghai Grand Opera House, in partnership with Shanghai-based institute ECADI.
The building's design is influenced by an open Chinese fan and will feature a white spiral staircase. Its rooftop can serve as a landscape platform for the public.
The project is expected to be completed in the following four to five years. According to the plan, the Shanghai Grand Opera House is expected to hold more than 600 performances and receive over 600,000 visitors in its first year of opening.
