Five people are dead and nine have been injured after a car accident in Shanghai's Putuo district at 9.25am this morning, Thursday, October 24.
Footage of the incident shows a white car speeding through an intersection at Jinshajiang Lu and Daduhe Lu, before colliding with another car.
According to police, the driver ran through a red light, hitting a taxi and a woman on an ebike. The driver then sped up and ran another red light, hitting several pedestrians and even more vehicles.
Shanghai Security Bureau released a post on Weibo at 11.48am today, announcing that an investigation into the cause of the accident is currently underway. As of 5.50pm, police have ruled out that the driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The driver, a 63-year-old male surnamed Chen, was rescued following the crash.
