Introduction:

Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, often abbreviated as SUFE, was founded in 1917 and is the oldest university in China specializing in finance. The university actually traces its roots to Nanjing, where it began as a commerce program at the Nanjing Higher Normal School. Four years later in 1921, the program transferred to Shanghai and was renamed the Shanghai College of Commerce, and quickly became one of the defining institutions of commerce and finance in China. Several of the early faculty members belonging to the university were educated in top schools worldwide, including Harvard University, Colombia University, and the University of Edinburgh, helping shape the trajectory and organizational style of the entire university. By 1985 the school was renamed as the Shanghai University of Finance and Economics.

As with other major universities in Shanghai, SUFE features four campuses. The Guoding Road Campus serves as the center of the university and hosts a majority of the schools undergraduate students. Other undergraduates and graduate students stay at the Wuchuan Road Campus, which is situated right next to Guoding Road Campus. The universitys MBA program, Chinese language program, and international students stay at the North Zhongshan No.1 Road Campus. The Wudong Road Campus is currently being built and will contribute greatly to the universitys programs and educational goals.

International and domestic rankings of the school:

In 1997 on the 80th anniversary of the schools founding, General Secretary Jiang Zemin said, With views into the new century, develop Shanghai University of Finance and Economics into a first-rate university. In the last 25 years, Shanghai University of Finance and Economics has remained a leading school of finance in China. In 1996 the school joined Project 211 and later became recognized by the Chinese Ministry of Education as a Double First-Class Discipline University.
